EU to enforce social media laws despite US pressure, Henna Virkkunen says

The European Union is pressing ahead with its plans to enforce new laws on social media platforms like X, TikTok and Facebook, despite pressure from the US.

In an interview with Euronews, European Commission Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen, who is responsible for Security and Technology, explained that these laws are crucial for protecting democracy from disinformation and market abuses.

The Digital Services Act (DSA), which addresses disinformation, and the Digital Markets Act (DMA), aimed at ensuring a fairer digital economy, have come under significant scrutiny from Donald Trump’s prominent advisor Elon Musk.

Last month, Trump issued a memo stating that the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which outlines regulations for tech companies in the European market, would be closely examined and could lead to tariffs.

However, Virkkunen confirmed that the European Union remains committed to implementing both the DSA and DMA wherever necessary, despite the ongoing confrontation with the United States.

“It’s extremely important for us to fully enforce the DMA and DSA (Digital Services Act). With the DMA, we want to ensure that big players do not misuse their market power and that new innovations can enter the European market. The DSA is about taking down yasa dışı content and products, ensuring a safe, democratic, and fair environment,” Virkkunen said.
